The best thing about doing anything naked is that you’re always prepared. It’s not like going to the gym, where you have to remember your shoes and, well, your clothes. This became evident earlier this week as I was contemplating attending my first co-ed naked yoga class. I was late leaving work and didn’t have time to run home and get ready, so I was on the verge of wimping out until I realized that, quite literally, um, I was born ready.

In fact, I was so ready that I arrived at the yoga studio almost thirty minutes early. I decided to go on inside so I’d have first dibs on potential obstructed view seating. My nervousness, however, had caused me to overlook one important fact: thirty minutes early equals thirty minutes of extra naked-with-strangers time. Duh.

The man behind the counter was very friendly and very clothed, and he asked if I was there for the yoga or the Ecstatic Dancing.

“Um, the yoga,” I said quietly. “You know, the yoga?” I raised my eyebrows slightly for emphasis.

“Great,” he said. “It’s your first time?”

“Not my first time doing yoga, but my first time doing, you know, this yoga,” I told him.

“Well, we’re happy to have you! The class is in there,” he said, pointing to lucky door number one. “Just leave your shoes out here.”

“Um, how do I… I mean, where do I, um…” I stammered.

“There’s a little room in there where you can get ready. There’s a bathroom, too.”

Believe it or not, Satanists are pretty much just like you and me. This is assuming, of course, that you and me wore black trench coats and played with big foam swords in the courtyard outside my college dorm. Which I did not do. But still. There’s more to a person than his or her taste in outerwear or choice of sword construction material. When it comes down to it, the meeting of Satanists, Dark Pagans, Left-Hand-Path Occultists, et al. really wasn’t that different from any other meeting of like-minded individuals that I’ve attended.

In fact, I’m pretty sure a meeting of, say, Promise Keepers, would have frightened me quite a bit more. Or last year’s RNC. Initially, this fearlessness was due in part to the fact that we were meeting in public- in a pizza restaurant- but I quickly learned one thing that’s so darn lovable about Satanists: They don’t care what you believe, and they’re sure as hell (sorry) not going to try to convince you to change. And that, my friends, is refreshing.

This was evident from the get-go as we went around the table introducing ourselves. There was a Vampyric Occultist, a Werewolf Order Satanist, a Chaotic Occultist, a handful of Modern Satanists, a general Left-Hand-Path Occultist, an Otherkin, and maybe a Dark Pagan or two. And though I had no idea what any of that meant, I could tell by people’s reactions that it was a pretty diverse crowd. Oh, and there was me. I guess I’d call myself a lapsed Catholic (sorry mom, but it could obviously be worse), but I kept that to myself.

“I’m Wendy,” I said, trying to maintain a friendly yet not overly cheerful expression. No one asked me to elaborate.

Okay, Wendy, you’ve rehearsed this. You are Sam. Sam Johnson. Samantha. You’re here to learn the fine art of picking up women. You’re curious. You’re a fan. You saw him on YouTube.

I was limping to the Driskill in the rain giving myself a pep talk. My broken foot and frizzy hair were throwing a wrench in my feigned persona.

I’d signed up for Adam Lyons’ Free Pick-Up Artist Boot Camp online, and I had figured I’d use a gender-neutral name and make up my story later. But it was crunch time.

The doorman gave me directions to the room without even asking for a secret handshake.

I found it and was greeted by a man wearing shiny pants.

“Is this the, um, Pick-Up Artist Boot Camp?” I asked.

“Yes…” the shiny-pantsed man said. “I’m Adam Lyons.”

There was a tinge of your vagina’s presence is unexpected in his expression, but he reached out and shook my hand warmly. He was… charming.

I gulped.

“I’m Wendy,” I blurted out. Dammit. “I write for the Austinist, and I was wondering if I could sit in with you guys?”

The bleachers rang out: ‘Choke! Choke!’

“Of course! Thanks for coming!” he said, still shaking my hand. “Let me introduce you to my wife…”

He pointed to the supermodel-esque woman standing behind the camera at the back of the room. I guess the proof was in the pudding.

On his website, AL claims his techniques ‘will get you supermodel quality women no matter your looks, age, income or nationality… even if you’re ugly, broke, short, fat, dumb, or old…’ I should note, however, that AL is attractive, young, British and most likely pretty loaded.

KEYE TV ‘Austin Live’ Segment on The SARF

The Stuffed Animal Rescue Foundation (S.A.R.F.) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of abandoned, outgrown or neglected Stuffed Animals. We find permanent and/or foster homes for rescued Stuffed Animals (SAs), and we provide shelter, snuggles and good conversation in the interim. We are committed to the physical and mental rehabilitation of stuffed victims of abandonment, and we raise awareness of these problems through our Stuffed Animal Petting Zoo events.
